Project Spotlight: Custom Fabricated Basket Strainers

15-11-2017
Fabricated basket strainer

This August, IFC was given a project to complete a set of three fabricated basket strainers. At IFC, our fabricated basket strainers range from 1” to 96” in diameter. They are manufactured according to customer specifications.

Typically, these strainers are found in horizontal pipelines to protect equipment downstream by filtering out solids. The fabricated basket strainers are part of the client's expansion project. We are completing the project in a ten-week timeframe to meet the client’s urgent requirements. The strainers will measure 36” and 48” diameter units.

In September, engineering AutoCAD drawings and design calculations were approved and released for fabrication. The images you see here show the strainers in progress, using our approved arc welding procedures to maximize efficiency.

Below are the key steps in the project management process:

Consultation Stage

  1. IFC provides a quotation based on the data sheets provided
  2. Technical clarifications stage
  3. Purchase order

Design and Engineering Stage

  1. AutoCAD drawings submitted for approval
  2. After approval the strainers are released for manufacturing
  3. Raw material is ordered by the purchasing department
  4. Application for CRN Registration is submitted
  5. Material is received and reviewed by IFC’s Quality Control Department
  6. Material is prepared by IFC fitters for approved welding processes

Manufacturing and Testing Stage

  1. Welding commences and is reviewed by Technical Standards Safety Authority (TSSA) Inspectors at hold points
  2. IFC Screen Department completes the customized screen based on the customers filtration requirements
  3. Upon completion of welding the following nondestructive examination tests are being completed 100%
  4. Radiography of butt-welds and 100% magnetic particle inspection of fillet welds

Inspection and Shipping Stage

  1. Final Inspection
  2. The Strainers are registered as a pressure vessel in Canada
  3. Packaged for shipment
